No messages in what you chose
Meta splits a long history into several zip files, and it splits them by size rather than by
what is inside. Most of the parts hold nothing but photos, video and voice notes — the
messages sit in one or two of them, and there is no way to tell which from the file name.
Select all the parts at once, or the folder you downloaded them into. They are read
together as one export, and the parts without messages cost nothing to include.
3 · Check before you send
We think you are — everything you wrote is labelled SUBJECT, everything the other person wrote is labelled OTHER.
Only the sender label is replaced. If a message says a name out loud, that text is kept exactly as written.
Read anything below before you send it. Everything shown is read straight out of the file itself — it is exactly what the researchers would receive.

Keeping your data private
We are two master’s students. Our theses ask whether a language model, given enough of someone’s writing with other people, can answer survey questions the way that person would.
Answering that takes real conversations, which is a lot to ask of anyone. So we wrote this rather than ask you to hand over your export. It runs on your own computer and we never receive the archive. You read the whole file before deciding whether to send it.
